Eating @ The Gurnard's Head

Home to so many interesting and dedicated people who grow and nurture plants and animals, West Cornwall is a wonderful place in which to run a kitchen.

And, like so many things, food is best kept simple. We have built the reputation of the Gurnard’s Head’s kitchen on this maxim.

Our short, fresh and seasonal menu changes every day according to what is brought to our back door or what our chefs feel is at its seasonal best.

In Winter you might get Fish Soup with Rouille or in summer, a Ceviche of Sea Bass alongside leaf salads foraged by Fat Hen.

The tables in the bar, warmed by log fires and bordered by back copies of Giles cartoon annuals, are as popular as those in the red and blue dining room.

On the more beautiful days between March and October, eating in the huge enclosed garden has the power to be one of those moments in life when everything comes together.

Food News

Max Wilson took over as Head Chef here at The Gurnard's in June 2016.  He had been an outstanding Head Chef at our sister inn, The Felin Fach Griffin, for 18 months but the pull of Cornwall was too great for him and his wife, Jo.

He took over the inheritance of a select collection of Head Chefs we've worked with here from Matt Williamson to Bruce Rennie.

It's so gratifying to see our people having the ability to find opportunities across this little business, not only by moving up the hierarchy but also by moving across our three inns.

Supper

Our supper menu is short, seasonal and delicious. All our food is cooked to order and the menu will change a little every day depending on what our suppliers are bringing us.

Turn to our supper page to see what you might eat for your supper were you to visit The Gurnard’s Head at this time of year.

Recognition

Recognition comes ultimately from guests but, for what it’s worth, we've been included in The Good Food and Good Hotel Guides, Hardens and Michelin since opening, as well as many travel and food websites.

For a toe-curlingly kind but completely independent report of a lunch with us, go to Jonathan Browning’s brilliant gastro-blog, “Aroundbritainwithapaunch
